Schools warn of a dangerous game

WINCHESTER -- An increasing number of area students have been playing "Pass Out," Frederick County Public Schools officials warned Friday.

The Student Support Services Department in the past week learned that more and more youths are playing a "game" that produces "a euphoric high" similar to one caused by certain drugs, according to a schools system news release.

"Pass Out" causes oxygen deprivation to the brain. At the same time, it can cause injuries, seizures, brain damage and possibly stop the heart from beating, the release states.

The game also goes by "California High," "Tap Out" and "Knock Out," according to the release.

Symptoms seen in those people who play the game may include dizziness, bloodshot eyes, disorientation, or headaches, according to Health Services Coordinator Pam Unhoch.

Parents are urged to talk to their children about the dangers of playing the game, said Director of Student Support Services Mitch Peeling.

Anyone who needs additional information should contact their child's school nurse or Unhoch at 662-3889, ext. 88131. More information also can be found at www.healthleader.uthouston.edu/archive/Neurology/2006/passoutgame-0510.html.
