Beach party to offer new events

WINCHESTER -- Organizers for the 85th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival have announced changes to the Jim Stutzman Chevrolet-Cadillac Life's a Beach Party event on May 4 and a boat and RV show at the Weekend-in-the-Park event.

The Beach Party will take place from 8 p.m. to midnight on May 4 at the Sprint tent on the Winchester Medical Center campus. The new location has an asphalt floor so visitors can wear their good beach shoes, according to a festival press release.

The Beach Bumz will play beach-themed dance music, and new this year will be a "Best Body on the Beach" contest for men and women, hula hoop and limbo contests, a mechanical surfboard simulator and a new food supplier at the food court. The "Best Body" contest will award prizes, including a 3-day, 2-night beach getaway.

The Weekend-in-the-Park event will offer the Shenandoah Valley Boat and RV Show with guest appearance by horticulturist, author and lecturer, Andre Viette, on May 6.

Viette lives in Fishersville and has developed Andre Viette Farm and Nursery, which grows more than 3,000 varieties of perennials.
