Flowers, moms, dogs set for weekend
By Alex Bridges -- firstname.lastname@example.org
Spring flowers and Mother's Day go hand in hand this weekend.
The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley on Amherst Street in Winchester celebrates National Gardens Day today with free activities such as a guided tour about butterflies and a tai chi class. The museum's galleries and Glen Burnie Gardens will be open free to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 662-1471, extension 225, for more information.
Also on Friday at the Museum the One Book One Community plans to announce its choice for the 2012 program. One Book One Community selects a book for the community served by the Handley Regional Library system. Activities are then scheduled to coincide with the community's reading of the selection.
The plants and flowers theme continues throughout the weekend as the State Arboretum at Blandy Farm in Boyce hosts its garden fair on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost is $10 per vehicle. Call 837-1758 for more information.
Families with children who enjoy angling can try their luck Saturday at the 15th annual Kid's Trout Fishing Day. The free event takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Happy Creek, Gertrude Miller Park, in Front Royal near Bing Crosby Stadium. Children ages 2-15 may participate but must be able to fish with minimal assistance. Participants can win prizes. While the event is free organizers will accept donations. Call 636-8882 for more information.
Area dog lovers seeking an outdoor activity for their pets can participate in the Canine Carnival. The event returns to Sherando Park on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and proceeds support the Esther Boyd Animal Shelter. Activities and events include dog yoga, demonstrations by the Mount Weather Police Department, Frederick County Sheriff's Office and Blue Ridge Dog Training. McGruff the Crime Dog also makes an appearance. Visit www.co.frederick.va.us/parks/communityevents.aspx for more information.
