Memorial holiday to honor tradition

Memorial Day Weekend long has been deemed the unofficial beginning of summer, and residents around the area will celebrate the warm weather in a multitude of ways.

With a variety of entertainment, the long weekend offers the Woodstock Music on the Main Music Series tonight, the uncovering of area swimming pools Saturday, and the culmination of the three-day weekend's traditions with memorial services on Monday.

Kicking off the Music on the Main series tonight, The Amanda Wilkins Band and The Stars are Projectors will perform from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Main Street Park. Admission is free and guests are invited to bring a picnic, chair and blanket.

Area pools will open for the summer season this weekend, most offering shortened hours until public schools let out for the school year.

The Clarke County Swimming Pool Complex, at 255 Al Smith Circle in Berryville, will be open Saturday through Monday from noon to 6 p.m. and will continue on weekend hours until June 18. For more information, call 955-5140 or visit www.co.clarke.va.us.

Frederick County/Winchester
The outdoor pool at Jim Barnett Park will be open Saturday through Monday from noon to 6 p.m. and will continue on weekend hours until June 6. For more information, call 667-2699 or visit www.winchesterva.gov/parks.

Clearbrook Pool, at 3300 Martinsburg Pike, five miles north of Winchester, will be open Saturday through Monday from noon to 6:30 p.m. and will continue on weekend hours until June 7. Regular hours are from noon to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and noon to 6:30 on weekends. For more information, call 665-5678.

Sherando Pool, at 185 S. Warrior Drive, in Stephens City, will be open Saturday through Monday from noon to 6:30 p.m. and will continue on weekend hours until June 7. Regular hours are from noon to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and noon to 6:30 on weekends. For more information, call 665-5678.

Shenandoah County
Edinburg's Madison District Pool will be open this weekend from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Monday, and from 12:30 to 6 p.m. on Sunday. It will continue on weekend hours until June 9. For more information, call 984-8521.

Mt. Jackson's Town Pool will be open Saturday and Monday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. The pool will be on weekend hours until June 8. For more information, call 477-2670 or 477-2121.

The New Market Community Pool will be open this weekend from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday through Monday and will continue on weekend hours until June 4. For more information, call 740-3432.

The Strasburg Community Pool, at 295 Park Road, will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Monday, and from 12:30 to 7 p.m. on Sunday. It will continue on weekend hours until June 8, when hours will be 1 to 6 p.m. On June 9, normal operating hours will resume. For more information, call 465-9197.

The pool at Woodstock's W.O. Riley Park, at Summit and Park avenues and Washington St. will be open from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and Monday, and from 1 to 7 p.m. on Sunday. It will continue on weekend hours until June 8, when normal hours will be 1 to 7 p.m. For more information, call 459-3045.


Warren County

The Claude A. Stokes Jr. Community Swimming Pool, at Gertrude E. Miller Community Park on Bing Crosby Road in Front Royal, will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and from noon to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. The pool will be on weekend hours until June 13, after which normal operating hours will be noon to 6 p.m. For more information, call 635-7750.

The Northern Virginia 4-H Educational Center, at 600 4-H Center Drive, will be open this weekend, with a Polar Bear swim from 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday, and normal swim hours from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday through Monday. The pool will be on weekend hours until June 8. For more information, call 635-7171.

The area's Memorial Day services will honor local and national soldiers that have died for their country.

The Winchester-Frederick County Veterans Council will present one of the largest area services this year, with retired U.S. Navy Capt. George Glavis speaking at the ceremony beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Glavis, who grew up in Fairfax County, studied engineering at George Washington University before attending the U.S. Naval Academy, according to a press release about the memorial service. After the Vietnam War, he continued in the Naval Reserve while working as a manage at AT&T and later with the U.S. Department of State.

The program also will include Frederick Co. Supervisors Board Chairman Richard Shickle and Winchester Mayor Elizabeth Minor.

Weather permitting, almost 400 American flags will line the roads at Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Other area Memorial Day events will include:
A 4 p.m. service Sunday by the Maurertown Brethren Church at the Maurertown Cemetery

An 11 a.m. service Monday at the Strasburg American Legion Post 77, at Riverview Cemetery in Strasburg.

An 11 a.m. service Monday at the Shenandoah County VFW Post 2447 in Edinburg will include the Woodstock VFW Post 199 and honor Vietnam War veterans.
