By Kim Walter -- email@example.com
Area residents are invited to participate in the upcoming Relay for Life events that will take place in the next few weeks. Participation can mean registering for a team, fundraising throughout the year and at the event, or just coming the evening of and supporting the fight against cancer.
Shenandoah County's Relay for Life event will be held at the Shenandoah County Fairgrounds Friday with the opening ceremony beginning at 7 p.m. Members of the Washington Redskins will make a stop from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. as part of their Thank You Tour.
Entertainment will start at 5:30 p.m. with local vocalist, Jon Robert Rimel. Survivors will take the first lap, led by childhood cancer survivors. The caregivers lap will follow.
Fun for all will be available throughout the evening, with games, rides, contests and of course, walking. The Luminaria Ceremony will start at 9 p.m. and closing ceremonies will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday morning.
The county currently has 33 teams with 545 registered participants, 118 of them survivors.
So far, more than $66,000 has been raised.

The Front Royal and Warren County Relay for Life starts on June 9 at 6 p.m. with opening ceremonies at Skyline High School.
New to the event this year is a dunking booth, which will raise money by allowing participants to dunk several town and county officials including Sheriff Daniel McEathron, Mayor Tim Darr, Town Manager Steve Burke and Board of Supervisor Chairman Archie Fox.
The event's theme is cartoons, which will play into decoration of team campsites and themed laps. A bra auction will take place at 2 a.m. featuring decorated bras worn by a selected team member.
All activities will end at 6 a.m. with the Awards and Fight Back Ceremonies and Breakfast.
So far, that relay event has 38 teams and 531 participants who have raised almost $60,000.

On June 15, Winchester and Frederick County will host their Relay for Life at James Wood High School.
The survivor reception will begin at 5:30 p.m., with opening ceremonies starting an hour later. Around 7 p.m. a "Miss Relay Contest" will take place, with males dressing as women. This will be one of many on-site fundraisers.
A DJ will provide entertainment throughout the night, and there will be themed laps, a Zumba-thon, an ice cream social and corn hole tournaments, among other activities.
Concessions will be available all night, including breakfast with the event's end at 7 a.m.
The 71 teams and 843 registered participants have raised $142,095 so far, with a little less than 100 survivors signed up.
