The road to becoming a full-time musician has been long and trying, but 29-year-old Jayme Salviati has arrived.

"I've always wanted to do that, but ... it's hard work," she said by phone recently. Salviati graduated from Shepherd University with a bachelor's degree in Mass Communications, but her passion always has been music.

The Martinsburg, W.Va., singer/songwriter has traveled the East Coast for years but only recently discovered the local vineyard circuit. Tonight she plans to perform at the Winchester Book Gallery on the Loudoun Street Pedestrian Mall with her bass player Eric Higgins.

"It's just the two of us, so we just go by my name," Salviati said. "It's kind of unique."

Originally from Northern Virginia, she's played at Below the Fringe in Winchester, a basement music venue underneath a hair salon on the walking mall.

"I've played a lot of local vineyards in Virginia," she said. Her upcoming plans include multiple performances at vineyards in Loudoun County this summer.

"The vineyards are a big part of what I do now," she said. She's performed from Washington, D.C., to New York City, but it was at a Virginia vineyard that she found a match for her musical style. "And I never knew that before," she said.

"I consider myself an acoustic singer/songwriter," she said. "I played one vineyard and then I realized, wow this is a perfect fit."

Salviati also teaches music classes for the Let There Be Rock School. The school has locations in Philadelphia and in Columbia and Frederick, Md. Salviati has been teaching at the two Maryland schools since October.

"And I love it, it's so much fun," she said. The school instructs children ages 5 and up, and adults of all ages. "I would say ... they want to be there, so it makes it so much more fun."

So what's next for a musician who's already achieved her dreams of making a living at music? Writing and recording her first full-length CD, she said. She plans to begin recording it later this year.

"I'm always writing," she said. "I'm always recording."

Jayme Salviati will perform at the Winchester Book Gallery Friday at 9 p.m. For more information about her music, visit JaymeSalviati.com.
