Weekend to include outdoor activities

With the week's high temperatures abating in time for the weekend, outdoor activities like touring local farmers markets or attending a garden show could be a fun start to the summer.

The Northern Shenandoah Valley Master Gardeners Association will host its annual Garden Fest on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the grounds of Belle Grove Plantation, at 336 Belle Grove Road in Middletown.

Activities are free and will include a children's program from 9 a.m. to noon, a Master Gardener Plant Sale, demonstrations and workshops on garden topics, three keynote garden presentations, Second Hand Rose's Garden Shop, music, educational displays and a petting area. Garden-related and food vendors will be on site as well.

The Front Royal Farmers Market opens for the season this weekend, with hours on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the Warren County Government Center at Commerce Avenue, and on Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the downtown gazebo on the corner of Main and Chester streets.

Normal operating hours are on Saturday through October and on Tuesday through August.

Shenandoah County
Farmers Market at Cristina's Cafe, at 219 W. King St. in Strasburg, is open on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m., mid-May through October.

The Mount Jackson Farmers' Market, in the parking lot of the Old Farmers' Co-op, at 5973 King St. in Mt. Jackson, is open on Wednesday from 2 to 6 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Shenandoah Farms Market, at 9354 Orkney Grade Road in Mt. Jackson, is open Monday and Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 477-9792 for more information.

Woodbine Farm Market, at 5199 John Marshall Highway at Lebanon Church near Strasburg is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., May through November. Call 465-2729 for more information.

The Woodstock Farmer's Market, at the Fort Valley Nursery in Woodstock, is open Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon., May through October. Call 459-4917 for more information.

Frederick County
Marker-Miller Orchards Farm Market, at 3035 Cedar Creek Grade, is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., June 1 through Thanksgiving. Call 662-1980 for information.

Shawnee Springs Market is at 6656 N. Frederick Pike in Cross Junction. Call 888-4164 for information.

Shen-Val Farm Market, at 2189 Fairfax Pike in White Post, is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call 868-0366 for more information.

Virginia Farm Market, at 1881 N. Frederick Pike in Winchester, is open for its summer season. Call 665-8000 for more information..

The Winchester City Market, at 2 N. Cameron St., is open on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., June through October. Call 662-1713 for more information.

The Middletown Farmers Market, at 2325 First St., is open Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon, May through October. Call 550-6476 for more information.

The Freight Station Farmers Market, in the parking lot of Winchester Little Theatre at 315 West Boscawen St., is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call 304-229-3457 for more information.
