Eric, from Front Royal, celebrated his 11th birthday last Sunday at the Front Royal Church of the Brethren.
When Eric was born, his mother had no amniotic fluid, which resulted in multiple birth defects. He spent 10 months in the hospital in Charlottesville, which led to him spending time at the city's Ronald McDonald House. His grandmother, Sharon Kindall, decided to give back to the group that gave her family and Eric so much.
"It just made us feel good when we were there," she said. "You meet people who are going through similar things ... kind of like a support group."
Eric can't walk or talk and requires a feeding tube to eat. Kindall felt that instead of people giving toys and such as gifts that Eric can't often use, donations for the Ronald McDonald House would be better utilized.
"Every year we have a party, because we like to celebrate his life," she said. Eric has lived with Kindall and her husband since coming home in 2002.
Kindall found a wish list on the organization's website, and made it available to those attending Eric's party. The donations that were collected will be delivered this weekend, but Kindall welcomes additional gifts as they will return to the house again in August.
