For singer/songwriter and Front Royal native Amanda Davis, the release of her debut album has been a long time coming.

The album, "Name on the Wall," came out on May 23, and features eight original songs by Davis.

"We recorded everything about a year ago," she said, but the 27 year old has been singing with vocal coach Lorin Peters since she was 14.

"I told him that I wrote," Davis said, and he coached her for a while, but then she decided to take a five year break. She fell in love, she said. Now with her husband Rickey and 4-year-old son Tristan by her side, the Front Royal bank teller is ready to focus on her musical career.

The album is "a little saucy, flirty," she said.

The title song is about going out on the town and noticing how people make first judgments about her, maybe even underestimating her, before they get to know her.

"When I walk through the door, people write my name on the wall," she said. The title song is one of her favorites on the album, which she said has taken on a meaning of its own. It's about putting her name out there -- writing her own name on the wall.

Her music has hip-hop and jazz influences, reminding of singers as varied as Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey and Toni Braxton, but with a voice that's all her own. Davis said she doesn't aspire to be like any other particular singer.

It's important to know who you are, she said. People who don't have that self-assurance, she said, "They don't have the longevity. You're just imitating. You're never creating anything new."

Having grown up with parents in the military, Davis was born in Germany and later lived in Belgium before moving to the United States. She's wanted to be a singer for as long as she remembers, she said.

"I had about five minutes where I wanted to be a flight attendant," she said. Besides that, she's always known her goal, and armed with her first CD, she said she's looking into setting up performances around the area. Until then, fans can find her on Facebook, on Twitter at AmandaDavisRise or at PerimusMusicGroup.com/AmandaDavis.

Being available online, "You're more accessible to people, which is nice," she said.

"I'm just a little girl, you know, just like everyone else," she said. "If you want something real bad, you're gonna do it. Just got to keep doing it."
