The weekend will offer area residents a variety of activities, from the Shrimp, Oyster and Barbecue Festival in Front Royal to the "Changing of the Leaves" car show in Orkney Springs.
In Front Royal, the annual United Way Shrimp, Oyster and Barbecue Festival will take place Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Volunteer Fire Hall, at 221 Commerce Ave.
An all-you-can-eat seafood buffet will feature large steamed shrimp, oysters fried and on a half shell, barbecue and more. Beer and wine will be available, and an extensive silent auction will take place.
Ticket prices will be $50 for adults and $25 for children 4 to 11, and all proceeds will go to 12 local United Way agencies. For tickets or more information, call 635-3636.
Also in Front Royal Saturday, the police department and other town services will offer a free open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Gertrude Miller Park, where departments on display will include police, environmental and energy services and the visitor's center.
Police will conduct K-9 officer demonstrations and Air Care plans to land and show one of the rescue service's helicopters at the event. The open house also features children's activities, fingerprinting, a moon bounce, a barrel ride and free food.
In Shenandoah County on Sunday, the Orkney Springs Fire and Rescue Department will present the "Changing of the Leaves" car show.
Entries are $10, and admission for spectators is free. Food and games will be available for all ages. For more information, call 856-3058.
For a nearby day trip, head up to Martinsburg, W.Va., for the 2012 Thunder Over the Blue Ridge Air Show, which will take place Saturday and Sunday.
The two-day open house will be hosted by the West Virginia Air National Guard's 167th Airlift Wing.
Opening ceremonies for the air show are expected to begin at 11:45 a.m. both days, with aerial acts performing from noon to 4 p.m. each day.
