Weekend events to recall past, save for future

Area events this weekend will take visitors back in time from a USO show and dance in Front Royal to an 80th birthday celebration of singer Patsy Cline in Winchester, or simply offer escape through a fun day with their pets during the Strasburg Doggie Dive-In.
To kick off the weekend celebration of Patsy Cline's life, on Friday, a Patsy Sing-a-Like and Look-a-Like contest will take place from 8 to 11 p.m. at Granny's Restaurant, on Berryville Pike in Winchester.
Then on Saturday, the Patsy Cline Historic House at 608 S. Kent St. in Winchester will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with an $8 admission to tour the house and see Cline's famous Western outfit, fur stole and pocketbook. Antique period cars, a tribute singer and birthday sweets will be available on site.
The Patsy Jamboree will take place from 8 to 11 p.m., with doors opening at 7 p.m., at the Winchester Elks Lodge No. 867, at 466 Front Royal Pike. The New City Band will play tribute music with lead singer Cathy "Kitty" Kerns in costume. Guests must be 21 years old and are invited to bring their own beer. The cost is $15 per person, and tables can be reserved for 8 people for $100 in advance.
Purchase tickets at the door (cash only) or in advance at the Winchester-Frederick County Visitors Center, at 1400 S. Pleasant Valley Road, at the Patsy Cline Historic House, Winchester Elks Lodge, or at Murphy Beverage Company, at 167 N. Loudoun St.

The Doggie Dive-In will take place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Strasburg Town Pool. The cost is $5, and admission proceeds will go to the intended dog park.
Dogs must be leashed outside of the pool area and have proof of an up-to-date rabies vaccine. No one under the age of 18 will be admitted without an adult. Glass containers are prohibited.

Also on Saturday, The Front Royal-Warren County Airport will host the 2012 Virginia Air Show, featuring military aircraft, hot air balloons, gyro copter, glider, para-sail, helicopter, barn storming, wing walker and biplane performances, multiple acrobatic aircraft performances, host of aircraft flights and the renowned Flying Circus.
Antique auto and aircraft displays will take place, and food will be available.
New this year is a WWII P-51 Mustang plus military and Air Care helicopters for the newly based air rescue service.
Since 2008 the Virginia Air Show has honored 9/11, promoted aviation and supported U.S. military veterans and those still serving.This year through a USO Show/Dance will donate half of all ticket proceeds from the dance to the USO-Metro.
The USO Show/Dance will offer a 40s theme. Gates will open at 6:30 p.m., and the show will be from 7 to 10 p.m. Admission is $3, and military in uniform get in free.
Period dress is welcome. Food, beer and wine will be available, and military vehicles will be on display. Dance band Jump Alley will perform, and weather permitting a Balloon Glow will take place.
