Chain of Checks project collects over $73K in 2012

Radio station 92.5 WINC-FM has announced that $73,139.64 was raised for the "Me Too" project through the Chain of Checks campaign that concluded on Dec. 31. The "Me Too" project will reach out to homeless students in Winchester and in Frederick and Loudoun counties throughout the school year to help with field trip money, school pictures, yearbooks, prom tickets and other ways that will help preserve the dignity of so many children.

The grand total includes proceeds from the Chain of Checks Golf Tournament in October, Chain of Checks Night at Wayside Theatre, opening night at Frederick County's Winter Wonderland, the Clarke County Community Band's Christmas Concert, a bowling tournament at Northside Lanes and the first ever Chain of Checks Radio-Thon on Dec. 13 and 14.

In addition to the loyal listeners that phoned in their pledges, schools, clubs, and business offices brought their collected donations to the WINC-FM studios in Winchester and Leesburg during the 28 hour radio-thon. Matching Dollar Challenges by Tri-State Nissan, The Bowman-Shoemaker Companies and Reynolds Pumpkin Farm also pledged.

An "on-air" check presentation will take place on Feb. 15 at 8:30 a.m. at the WINC-FM studios at 520 North Pleasant Valley Road in Winchester. Natalie Gerometta from Winchester City Schools, Mitch Peeling from Frederick County Schools and Donna Fortier from Mobile Hope in Loudoun County will be on hand to accept the gifts for their localities.

WINC-FM also announced that last October the Community Foundation of the Northern Shenandoah Valley became the fiscal sponsor of the Chain of Checks. At that time, the Chain of Checks also established its own endowment. This endowment will work to continue the "neighbor helping neighbor" belief of the Chain of Checks, for now and in the years to come. By establishing this endowment with the Community Foundation of the Northern Shenandoah Valley, all donations to the Chain of Checks are tax-exempt to the fullest extent.
