Military news School news The first place finishers included senior Rachel DuMez in the 500 freestyle (5:34.65) and 100 backstroke (1:02.09), with both times qualifying her for the post-season State Championship Meet, senior Will Scaring in the 200 freestyle (2:41.54), sophomore Anne Katherine Burns in the 200 individual medley (2:43.71) and the 400 freestyle relay team of 8th grader Tatumn Vaught, freshman Mollie Miller, DuMez and Burns (5:21.50). This was the first relay first place finish for a girls' team in the school's history. College news Saint Joseph's College of Maine offers traditional, four-year bachelor's degrees to students at its southern Maine campus on Sebago Lake and online undergraduate and graduate programs to working adults throughout the country. For more information, visit www.sjcme.edu. Kiwanis Club news Kiwanis Club President Tom Curry and others noted that Stull has taken an active role in a wide variety of the club's efforts. She can be counted on for everything from picking up roadside trash to helping put on the "Special Love" breakfast for children with cancer. Stull has also been active in taking photographs and lining up speakers and programs for the Kiwanis Club's weekly meetings. The Kiwanis Club, a global organization of volunteers, meets every Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. at the Front Royal Diner in Front Royal. The Virginia Manufactured and Modular Housing Association, VAMMHA, has recently appointed Jimmy Russell to represent the State of Virginia in a national association, the Manufactured Housing Institute. Russell will represent Virginia in February at the Winter Meetings in Washington DC as well as the Summer Conference in San Diego, CA. School news The Owls' overall record was 10-1; the team's mark was 4-0 in the conference regular season, earning a first place finish. In the conference tournament, the Owls scored 14 goals in two games and allowed only 2. The sweep of the regular season and tournament championships by the Owls was the first time that they have done this since 2005. On offense, the team scored 62 goals on the season, a nearly 6-goals-per-game average. The leading goal scorers, in order, were Campbell Baker, Connor Glennon and Gage Landis. On defense, goalkeeper Tanner Perry, with the help of his defenders, gave up just 3 goals in VMSC regular season play and only 19 for the season. He had 3 shutouts during the season, two in conference play and one in the VMSC semi-final contest. He gave up only 22 goals on the season in 17 games. He recorded shutouts in the post-season tournament in both the semi-finals and finals. School news The Savannah College of Art and Design is a private, nonprofit, accredited institution conferring bachelor's and master's degrees at distinctive locations and online to prepare talented students for professional careers. 4-H news The senior team had practiced after their win at the state contest in April until their departure to Louisville, Ky., on Nov. 13 to compete at the national level on the following Thursday. Many preparations took place to raise money, make jackets, t-shirts and organize the four-day trip. Out of 86 participants, senior team member Morgan Walls received a bronze pin for placing ninth in the egg production department and out of the 22 state teams, the Virginia team earned silver pins for placing fourth in the same department. Overall, the Virginia team placed ninth, receiving bronze pins. The team would like to thank Brian Cather for his coaching and the parents for making everything possible. USDA applications Sparkle Gala awards The award recognized that Byrd has dedicated thousands of hours to helping his neighbors through the Shenandoah County Free Clinic. Part of a 1996 focus group that identified that too many people were going without health care because they had no insurance and couldn't afford it, he spent five years researching how to start a Free Clinic, established the original board of directors and solicited volunteer support from other health professionals. He has served as the SCFC board president and medical director since it was established in 2001. Shenandoah Memorial Hospital was recognized as an early and ongoing supporter of Shenandoah County Free Clinic through supplying free diagnostic testing worth millions of dollars to Free Clinic patients over the 10 year period, free rent of one of its buildings and other logistical support. Accepting on behalf of the hospital's administration was Lore Bredeman, public relations and marketing manager. School news This is the second time in three years that the Wakefield girls' team has achieved a state ranking, as the 2010 to 2011 team stayed in the state top 10 for a number of weeks. Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley. Students on the Dean's List have attained a 3.4 or better grade point average of a possible 4.0. Rotary Club The Doc Smith program has been a long-standing program in Front Royal. It was originated by Edgar C. Smith, Chief of Police in 1916, who was most commonly referred to as Doc Smith. The program was named after him based on his continued service to the needy and typically serves 100-150 families throughout Warren County. The Rotary Club took over the program in 2003. College news Messiah College, a private Christian college of the liberal and applied arts and sciences, enrolls over 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Established in 1909, the primary campus is located in Grantham, Pa., near Harrisburg. A satellite campus affiliated with Temple University is located in Philadelphia. Sugarloaf Crafts Festival School news The school-level bee, at which students answer oral geography questions, is the first round in the 24th annual National Geographic Bee, sponsored by the National Geographic Society. The bee is open to students in grades four through eight and culminates in a national championship in May in Washington, D.C. Griffin, from Broad Run, won out over nine other Wakefield competitors. He and eighth grader Campbell Baker were the winners of the preliminary round. Griffin outlasted Baker in the finals round to take his third straight title. Griffin will now take a written test for school winners. Up to 100 top scorers on the test of winners in Virginia will be eligible to compete in the State Bee in April. State champions and a teacher-escort then move on to the finals. Wakefield teacher Christine Chatelain put together the competition and read the questions. She said, "the importance of geography is a better understanding of our world and the civilizations that are in it. For this reason, I like doing this." Teacher Lori Perry was the timekeeper and kept score; both teachers acted as judges. College news To be placed on the President's List, a student must have taken 12 college-level semester hours or more, attained a grade point average of 3.5 for any one semester, and earned a minimum of 20 semester hours at New River Community College. New River Community College is located in Dublin and is one of the Commonwealth's 23 community colleges. Women's self-defense School news Certamen is a specialized branch of quiz bowl that focuses exclusively on questions related to Latin grammar and vocabulary and Roman history, culture and mythology. Success requires extensive knowledge and speedy thinking. On Dec. 15, Wakefield students attended a Certamen at Riverbend High School in Fredericksburg; over 120 teams competed in the event. In the Level I contest, Wakefield teams placed fifth and eighth. The competitors included Tony Elar, Douglas Griffin, Alex Smith, Grayson Galeone, Jackson Romine, Zoe Porterfield, Harmony Lindstrom, Bernie Cieplak and Owen Youngquist. In Level II, Wakefield placed sixth; Aaron Corbett, Carolina Leonard and Brier Clough made up the team. Certamen competitions are held on Saturdays at various schools throughout the state. Teams consist of four players who compete in three preliminary rounds of play, then advance to the finals based on earning one of the top three total scores. On Jan. 5, the Owls teams competed in a Certamen at the Flint Hill School in Vienna. The Level I team (Elar, Griffin, Porterfield, Cieplak, Romine and Galeone) placed fifth; and the Level II team (Corbett, Leonard and Clough) won the first place trophy. Besides the annual trip to Boone, North Carolina in the fall, the women had the chance to take a tour of the White House in December. Club members celebrated the birthday of the chapter with a special dinner at the Woodstock Care and enjoyed a Christmas party at the home of Susan Chicchetto and Don Hindman. Service projects have included donating childrens books to Small Hands and canned food to the food pantry. Eta Chi serves Shenandoah County with several fund raising projects including a catalog party for the 31 company. All proceeds are donated to local charities. Eagle Scout School news Students will place the nest boxes, once they are constructed, on local farms with the hope of increasing the local wood duck population.
