First Friday events to kick off new year

By Josette Keelor

The beginning of January will bring with it several First Friday events around the area, as entertainment venues gear up for a fun start to 2013.

In Mt. Jackson, the Art Group Gallery will host a First Friday event from 7 to 10 p.m. with the band The Mash, featuring blues music by musicians John Sites, Jeremy Fidler, Chad White and Bill Kinkead, at 5998 Main St.

For more information, call 436-8234 or 477-4131

The Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum, at 54 S. Loudoun St. in Winchester, will offer free admission for its First Friday event from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

City Manager Dale Iman and community leaders will kick off the Old Town Winchester renovation project with a First Friday Dig at 4 p.m. The dig will take place alongside the 1840 Old County Courthouse on Rouss Avenue and give Iman and other community leaders an opportunity to smash existing bricks at the corner of Rouss and Loudoun streets.

The event will support the Old Town Development Board and downtown businesses as they remain open during the construction project. Businesses will benefit from the renovation as it attracts existing city patrons and new visitors to the area upon completion.

For more information, call 722-8700.

Later in the weekend:

The Winchester Bridal Expo will showcase more than 40 exhibitors with wedding-related products and services from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Shenandoah Valley Golf Club, 134 Golf Club Road north of Front Royal. Prizes include a free wedding gown, a tuxedo giveaway and a free wedding cake.
