Handley Library to celebrate author Ingalls Wilder

Next Wednesday, on the eve of the 146th birthday of Laura Ingalls Wilder's, author of the "Little House on the Prairie," Handley Regional Library will celebrate her work with two special programs featuring Constance Potter, reference archivist of the National Archives and Records Administration. Both programs are free and open to the public.

At 4:30 p.m. Potter will provide an age-appropriate program entitled Little House in the National Archives for children ages 8 and up in the Handley Library Auditorium. Library staff will extend the learning opportunity through activities, a craft from that time period, and a special take-home birthday treat.

Following the children's activities, at 6:30 p.m. Potter will demonstrate how records stored at the National Archives and Records Administration can shed new light on old family stories and popular literature, like how census records from the Dakota Territories confirm that Charles Ingalls filed homesteading documents, while federal climate records from that period reveal how harsh the winters were that pioneer families endured.

For more information, call the library at 662-9041, ext. 17.
