Art show for Wayside began Thursday

Daily Staff Report

Area artists have collaborated on an art show that opened Thursday at Wayside Theatre's Curtain Call Cafe n Middletown in an effort to help keep the theater in business.

The works were donated by local artists to help the theater reach its goal of raising $90,000 by the end of March, according to a recent press release from Wayside. The artwork is available for purchase, with all proceeds to benefit Wayside.

Artist Loretta Dovell Bailey of Stephens City, who organized the effort, was quoted in the release, stating, "I'd recently seen letters to the editor in the paper expressing sadness about Wayside Theatre's plight, but unless people take action, it won't mean much. I hope this idea takes off and is of some significant help."

The release quotes Artistic Director Warner Crocker as stating, "We are thrilled to have this amazing artwork showcased in the Curtain Call Cafe, and hope that this encourages some of our patrons to support Wayside, and also support these amazing local artists. Our community is filled with great performing and visual artists, and Wayside Theatre hopes to continue to be a home to Shenandoah Valley artists for years to come."

Other contributing artists are Linda Dovell Cooke of Clear Brook; Rita Dovell King of Berryville; Esther Hurd Dovell of Winchester; Sally Seabright of Winchester; Kathy Chumley of Stephens City; Jane Thompson of Winchester; Sandra Forbush of Flint Hill; and Cheryl Voytek of Millwood.

Contributing artists Leah Brumback and Penny Hounshell also were listed in the release.

The donated pieces include prints and original works.

The artwork will be on display at the Curtain Call Cafe during Wayside's normal business hours, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and before and during performances, Thursday to Sunday. The artwork also will be featured at www.waysidetheatre.org.
