Russian Pancakes Day to serve up fun a library

Daily Staff Report

In celebration of the end of winter, Handley Regional Library in Winchester will hold Maslenitsa, "Butterweek" or Pancakes Day in Russian, from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday.

As part of the cultural event, youth services will offer a special program featuring Russian circle dances; a workshop of nesting dolls, called matryoshka; children's games; book readings and the chance to sample traditional Russian pancakes, called bliny.

Organized by Winchester's Russian Club, of a group of community members of Russian descent or who appreciate the Russian culture, the event is "for the folks that are here," said librarian Donna Hughes. "It's for encouraging children to read and learn, and it's also about developing community."

The program is free and open to the public. For more information, call the library at 540-869-9000.
