St. Patrick's Day events to benefit community

By Josette Keelor

St. Patrick's Day is still a week away, but community-oriented events cropping up around the valley encourage residents to think green long in advance.

The St. Patrick's Day Celebration at the Shenandoah County Fairgrounds in Woodstock will take place from 8 p.m. to midnight March 16. Doors open at 7 p.m., and proceeds will benefit Luke's Backpack, the Community Elementary School Breakfast Group and Spring Forward.

The Valley Foundation organizes the event, and board member Jamie Pence said the non-profit chooses recipients based on need.

"We've done the St. Patrick's Day party, this is our third year doing it, but we've done other events in the past," she said.

"The Valley Foundation was a group that did the same type of thing in the '90s. They raised money for the helicopter pad at the hospital," she said. "Then it was reincorporated about seven years ago."

In the last six years, The Valley Foundation has raised over $100,000 for organizations in Shenandoah County, Pence said.

Tickets to next Saturday's event are $40 per person in advance or $65 at the door and include dinner catered by Shaffer's in Woodstock, adult beverages and live entertainment by JB and The Get Down Browns.

The event will take place at 300 Fairground Road rain or shine. For more information, call 540-975-0713 or visit www.thevalleyfoundation.net.

Sunday in Harrisonburg, the Shamrock 5K Trail Run will take place at Hillandale Park. Proceeds will support the Shenandoah Valley High Rollers Wheelchair Basketball Team.

Beginners are welcome, and tee shirts will be provided to the first 70 runners who pre-register. Race fees will be $20 per person. Race day registration will be from 8 to 9 a.m., and the 5K Trail Run begins at 9:30 a.m.

Due to trail size, no strollers or dogs will be permitted for race participants. For more information, call 540-433-9168.

In Front Royal Sunday, The Tiny, Little, Pre-Teen, Junior Miss and Miss Shamrock Pageant will take place from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the American Legion Post 53.

Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for students up to 14 and free to those under the age of 5.

For more information, call Barbara Ballentine at 540-635-8208 or Bonnie Lewis at 540-635-5510. All proceeds benefit the Warren County Fair Scholarship Pageant.
