Around the area this weekend, events for families, history buffs, music lovers and bargain hunters will help residents keep cool during the heat of midsummer.

The Old Town Winchester Business Association will present Winchester Days through Saturday, with a pet rescue event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Old Court House Lawn that includes a yard sale at 9 a.m., pet food tasting for animals from 10 to 11 a.m., pet photos from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a Rescue Runway fashion show at 1 p.m. The Top of Virginia Emergency Pet Sheltering Trailer will be on display and rescue groups will bring adoptable animals.

The Shenandoah Valley 46th Annual Steam and Gas Engine Association's Pageant of Steam will be today through Sunday at the Clarke County Fairgrounds, Va. 7, Berryville, with a parade, tractor pull, food, music and flea market with hard-to-find items. • An event to benefit the Disabled Veterans Committee on Housing for the future home of the Veteran's Community Center will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Strasburg Moose Lodge No. 403, 572 Red Bud Road, Strasburg. A community potluck luncheon also will include a U.S. Army rock wall, inflatable for children, face painting and the band The Joyful Noisemakers. Special appearances will include MVP 1983 Washington Redskin Mark Moseley and other Redskins alumni.

Cost: free, but donations welcome. The luncheon will be at noon. Bring a dish to share and arrive early for best seats and entertainment. A special prize drawing will cost $1 per ticket with two tickets for Miranda Lambert's concert on July 28, Steely Dan's concert on Sept. 20 and a Wolf Trap event on Sept. 11.

Conservation Campouts will include clouded leopards and birds at the camp out from 5 p.m. today to 10 a.m. Sunday at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, 1500 Remount Road, Front Royal. "Jubal's July" Second Battle of Kernstown commemoration will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at 33229 Old Valley Pike, Strasburg. A July 23, 1864, battlefield walking tour with author and historian Scott C. Patchan will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, and a Civil War church service at 10 a.m. Sunday followed by a 1 p.m. memorial service dedicated to Union Colonel James Mulligan of the Irish Brigade, mortally wounded in front of the Pritchard House.

Local authors will be on site to discuss and sign their Civil War books, including Barrett Dowell, Roderick Gainer, Jerry Holsworth, Thomas K. Tate and Patchan. Information: www.kernstownbattle.org.

The Hupp's Hill war lecture with John Christiansen, executive director of the Lee-Fendall House in Alexandria, will take place at Hupp's Hill Civil War Park, 33229 Old Valley Pike, Strasburg. Christiansen will discuss the experiences of Union prisoners of war captured in the Shenandoah Valley during the Gettysburg campaign.
