Going out: Weekend ushers summer into fall

By Josette Keelor

It's Labor Day weekend, the crossover from carefree days of summer to the more studious days of fall. School has already started for many, but a three-day weekend makes everyone feel like it's vacation time again. This year, it's made more literal by the weekend beginning in August and ending in September.

So, before you pack up the bathing suit and flip flops in favor of jeans and hiking boots, make the most of the long weekend.

Go to your neighborhood pool one last time, head to Front Royal for a historical roundtable event or head out even further to McGaheysville or Buena Vista where end of summer celebrations aim to make the most of the holiday weekend.

Swimming pools around the region are open for a final weekend of summer, and in Harrisonburg that goes for dogs too. From noon to 1:30 p.m. or 1:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Westover Pool, on South Dogwood Drive, canines with proof of current rabies vaccinations are welcome to splash into fun with other non-aggressive dogs. Dogs must be on a leash when not in the pool, and those on doggie duty must pre-register at 540-433-9168.

If you're looking for a historical retreat this weekend, head to Front Royal at 7 p.m. Friday night where the Commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Manassas Gap or Wapping Heights will be observed at Ivy Lodge, 101 Chester St. The free event is part of the Lower Shenandoah Valley Civil War Roundtable, which offers programs throughout the year at the Warren Heritage Society on Civil War-related topics.

The largest Civil War battle in Warren County, the Battle of Manassas Gap is the only battle in which Warren County infantrymen fought as a unit on their home soil.

Also known as the Battle of Wapping Heights, it was the final engagement of the 1863 Gettysburg Campaign.

Patrick Farris, executive director of the Warren Heritage Society, will give a brief overview of the battle, and Darryl Merchant's battle map will be on display with a full-sized copy of the Civil War Trails marker installed in Linden to commemorate the battle.

Or check out what's going on outside the area.

In McGaheysville, Massanutten Resort will hold its 4th annual Mountain Jamboree festival from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday. Rain or shine, live music and food and drink vendors will keep visitors going until the fireworks finale at 10 p.m. All proceeds will go to benefit the Shenandoah Valley Travel Association. Admission is free. For more information, call 800-847-4878.

Monday in Buena Vista, the 43rd annual Labor Day Festival, will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Glen Maury Park. Live music, a 5k road race, a parade, fireworks, vendors and more will keep the fun going all day. For more information, call 540-261-7321.
