Ruritans to fund cancer treatment
By Josette Keelor
In the tradition of Ruritan National's dedication to community, area clubs will combine efforts Saturday to raise funds for one of their own battling lung cancer.
When members of the Maur-Brook-Olive Ruritan Club learned of longtime member Jack Orndorff Jr.'s lung cancer diagnosis earlier this year, they wanted to help.
"Ruritan is all about fellowship, goodwill and community service," said club secretary Teresa Funkhouser. The fundraiser is intended to help cover medical costs incurred during Orndorff's frequent ongoing treatments.
The club, which covers Maurertown, Toms Brook and Mt. Olive, held a dance fundraiser on Aug. 17 at the Strasburg Moose Club, raising $5,000, and Funkhouser said profits raised from a Thirty-One Gifts fundraiser in July also contributed to the cause.
Dennis Morris, Maur-Brook-Olive club president, said nine clubs in the Ruritan's Zone 4 are helping in various ways with Saturday's fundraiser.
The family oriented event will take place from 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday and will include a silent auction, public auction, a 50/50 drawing, bake sales, a petting zoo, food by Shawn Rutz BBQ and at the West Shenandoah Ruritan Club's booth, ice cream by Melissa Rice, and children's games.
Live music will begin at 4:30 p.m. with The "Just 4 Fun" Band and Clay Arthur and the Mystic Pistols performing.
The clubs have asked for a $5 donation to attend.
"It's something that we've never done before," Morris said. "We're excited about it. The weather looks good."
But even before seeing the result of their combined efforts, Morris said "We're truly appreciative. We just want to thank people all we can."
Morris said the club doesn't have a monetary goal for Saturday's fundraiser, but with the support and interest he's seen from the community so far, he thinks the effort will be successful.
The real goal, Morris said, is to "help a fellow Ruritan, a very dedicated individual in our club."
Bring your dancing shoes, Funkhouser said, and "just come on out and enjoy a good time."
"Hopefully it'll be a good time for a good cause."
