Fish fry, art auction to raise awareness of river

By Josette Keelor

As it celebrates its 25th year, The Friends of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River also prepares for its upcoming ninth annual fish fry and art auction to raise money, education and advocacy for the river, said April Moore, chairman of the fish fry committee.

"We've grown a lot over that time, and we've become more effective," said Moore. "Our whole purpose is protecting the river," she said.

In recognition of that intention, she said the art displayed at the auction on Oct. 19 will have a river theme.

Lending paintings, fiber art creations and hanging pottery will be 11 artists from around the area.

Also at the event will be a quartet of musicians and a silent auction of services and goods from around the community, like chiropractic care, landscaping and a pizza party overlooking the river.

Tickets for the fish fry and art auction are $45, and the money goes to support the Friends of the North Fork's mission, "which is to protect the river," Moore said.

"Every summer we get kids out on the river," she said.

As part of the organization's effort to teach stewardship of the river, it partners with the Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office on a drug take-back program that collects expired or unused medication and disposes of it in a safe way to keep chemicals out of the river and prevent deformities in fish.

Moore said area farmers' efforts to keep a riparian buffer of trees and shrubbery between the river and their farms also helps keep the river clean.

"And it's also a good habitat for wildlife," she said.

She said she expects the fish fry to be a fun event and "a chance to meet other people who care about the river."

The Friends of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River's ninth annual fish fry and art auction will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct 19 at the Moose Lodge in Woodstock. Art that will be in the auction is currently on display at PJ Designs in Woodstock. For more information, call 540-459-8550 or visit www.fnfsr.org.
