Going Out: October full of spirit(s)

By Josette Keelor

October weekends offer that unique concoction of events seeking to raise funds, raise the roof and -- in pre-Halloween fun -- raise the dead.

So whether you're looking to lift spirits or cavort with them, chances are good you'll find the spirit of fall in the valley this weekend.

It all starts Friday with the Virginia German Shepherd Rescue's biggest fundraiser of the year, the Sixth Annual Golf Tournament & Auction. Registration begins at 11 a.m. at Blue Ridge Shadows Golf Course, 456 Shadows Drive, Front Royal. Come out and meet rescue dogs and shop for items at the Buy It Now and Silent Auction tables. Information: golf4dogs.blogspot.com, 540-409-7331

Saturday in Front Royal, a street ministry will be at the gazebo on the corner of Main and Chester streets from 2 to 9 p.m., with singing, a live band, a worship dance team and ministering from Gracie Christian Ministries Church at 334 Osage St.

A fall bazaar at Winchester Academy, 2400 Roosevelt Blvd., Winchester, will include more than 22 vendors and local crafters selling items like photographs and Longaberger baskets from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

From 4 to 9 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds in Harrisonburg, the 47th Annual Virginia Mennonite Relief Sale will include relief sales of quilts, artwork, homemade food, antiques, crafts, music and activities for the entire family. Admission is free. Information: 540-433-9993

Also at the fairgrounds at 6 p.m. Saturday, the Virginia Power Pull Truck and Tractor Pull will take place. Admission is $10 for ages 13 and up, $5 for ages 6 to 12 and free to children younger than 6. Information: 540-434-0005.

A Fall Bulb Sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at James Madison University's Edith J. Carrier Arboretum and Botanical Gardens and Saturday at the Godwin Field. Plants, shrubs, trees and rare bulbs will be available for sale. Information: 540-568-3194, www.jmu.edu/arboretum

In Staunton, the Frontier Culture Museum will kick off October with its German heritage-style Oktoberfest from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $10 in advance and $15 at the gate and will include music and dance entertainment, children's activities, food and beer vendors and artisans. Information: 540-332-7850, www.frontiermuseum.org

And what would October be without a haunted house?

Beginning this weekend and continuing through Nov. 2, DarkWood Manor in Luray will elicit screams with a new theme this year -- Mother Grimwood's DeadTime Stories: Frightful Fairy Tales & Freakish Fables. Through its detailed sets and storyline, movie quality make-up and dedicated actors, DarkWood weaves visitors through a maze of rooms, so be warned it's not for the weak of heart. Performances are at 104 N. Hawksbill St. from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday through Sunday and from 7 to 10 p.m. on Oct. 31. Admission is $12; VIP fast passes are $22. Cash only at the gate, or pay online. Information: 540-743-7850, www.darkwoodmanor.net.
