Going Out: Legends to close out lively weekend

By Josette Keelor

Have you ever wanted to play Frisbee golf in the snow, spend an afternoon with a room full of published authors or help disabled veterans while watching the son of famed singer Conway Twitty perform live?

This weekend, do all that and more.

The fun begins Saturday in Front Royal when area authors meet at Samuels Public Library, 330 E. Criser Road, Front Royal, to discuss the publishing business and talk with area residents.

Sponsored by the Royal Oak Bookstore and Page Master Used Books, the free afternoon will include a panel discussion at 1 p.m., with Ira Chaluff speaking on the publishing business. Then, a two-hour session will feature Chaluff along with other authors Malcolm Barr, Regina Doman, Robert Colacurcio, Heather Davis, Ben Hatke, Jerry Holsworth, Julia Campbell Johnson, Jake McGuire, Missi Magalis, Jose Padua, Brenda Seabrooke and Larry Yates.

Saturday's forecast calls for a chance of snow showers, so to find out if it's enough to postpone the program until Feb. 1, call the library at 540-635-3153.

Though the recent winter storm might have driven disc golf right out of residents' minds, a little snow won't deter West Park Golf Course at 305 S. Dogwood Drive in Harrisonburg from holding its annual fundraiser to benefit the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. The Ice Bowl Disc Golf will tee off at 11 a.m., following registration from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday. The first 50 players to register will get an Ice Bowl pack.

For $25, participants will play 21 holes. Afterwards, join the Harrisonburg Disc Golf Club for a potluck meal. Non-perishable food items will be collected for the food bank. Information: 540-433-2474, ed.steele@harrisonburgva.gov

In Chantilly, the Sugarloaf Crafts Festival will kick off its year of East Coast events with vendors planning to set up shop at the Dulles Expo Center, 4320 Chantilly Shopping Center Drive. Offering crafts of all types and prices, the fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission, valid for all three days, is $8 online, $10 at the door and free to children 12 and younger. Parking is free. Information: 800-210-9900 or www.sugarloafcrafts.com/festivals/chantilly/winter/

And ending the weekend on a good note will be the Country Legends Revival, featuring Michael Twitty, son of country legend Conway Twitty. Joining him will be seasoned Middletown singer, performer and actor Robbie Limon, the Carroll Brothers Band of Winchester and Warren County Middle School student Charlee Allman, who already has a following in and around the valley.

The concert from 3 to 7 p.m. at Millbrook High School, 251 First Woods Dr., Winchester, will benefit the Disabled Veterans Committee on Housing. Doors open at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased through the website www.eventbrite.com/e/country-legends-revival-tickets-9231239887
