Going Out: Valentine's to set mood for weekend

With Valentine's Day kicking off the weekend, there's a little love, a little chocolate and a lot of fun to last each livelong day.

Starting it all at 4 p.m. Friday will be a benefit silent auction and scavenger hunt at the Strasburg Library, 195 W. King St. For $20, beverages, hors d'oeuvres and live music are included. Afterward will be options for discounted dinners at Hi-Neighbor, Cristina's Café and Hotel Strasburg, with reservations required for dinner. Saturday, The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, 901 Amherst St., Winchester, will open its doors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. free to tours of the gallery and a variety of activities. Gallery talks will feature the history of objects in the museum's collection every hour from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Shenandoah Conservatory's Saxophone Quartet will perform ragtime, American folk and Broadway music in the reception hall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wheelchairs will be available free of charge. In Middletown, the Shenandoah Valley Runners will host the sixth race in its winter series, the Heart and Soles 5K, at 9:30 a.m. at the Middletown Office Building, 7875 Church St. As part of the event, the Italian Touch restaurant will offer a discounted price on a two-topping pizza, beginning at 10:30 a.m. For information or to volunteer at the race, call 931-1810, email aprilhadams@gmail.com or visit svrunners.org

In Front Royal, Kooky Chefs will cook up Chocolate Dreams at Samuels Public Library, 330 E. Criser Road, for children 8 and older. The Valentine's Day class will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pre-registration is required. Information: 635-3153, samuelslibrary.net

That night, the Winchester Book Gallery, 185 N. Loudoun St., will host free live music with Kim Perseghin at 7:30 p.m. Information: 667-3444, info@winchesterbookgallery.com

At 8 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday, the Shenandoah Conservatory symphony orchestra and choirs will perform "Carmina Burana" in the Armstrong Concert Hall. The opening and closing movements of Carl Orff's work feature "O Fortuna," which is frequently used as dramatic go-to music in commercials, cartoons and televised sporting events. Tickets for "Carmina Burana" are $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors and $6 for children and military. Information: 665-4569, conservatoryperforms.org

At 1:30 p.m. Sunday, local filmmaker Patrick Mason will premier his short 15-minute film "Those Poor Things" for free at Barns of Rose Hill, 101 Chalmers Court, Berryville. Information: 955-2004, barnsofrosehill.org
