Going Out: Weekend kicks off Valentine's festivities

Events this weekend will begin and end with chocolate, with the in between offering a variety of art, music, stories told on film and even a Saturday night dance.

• Valentine's Day is in the air a week early, beginning in Old Town Winchester with the first ever Chocolate Escape event, featuring gifts and desserts of chocolate from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.

Participating restaurants and businesses will offer small $2 desserts and other yummy items just in time for Feb. 14. Information: oldtownwinchesterva.com/events/chocolate-escape/ or email welcome@winchesterva.gov.

As part of Winchester's First Friday events, 1 lb Gallery will host an exhibit of small things to honor the short month of February, with artwork of everyday objects and other small-scale scenarios. The opening and artists' reception will be from 6 to 10 p.m. at 29 N. Loudoun St., 2nd Floor, Winchester. Information: 686-7316, onepoundgallery.com

• First Friday in downtown Harrisonburg includes free admission to the Explore More Discovery Museum at 150 S. Main St., from 4 to 7 p.m., as well as music and art at area businesses. Information: 540-442-8900

From 5 to 8 p.m., the OASIS artist and artisan co-op gift shop at 103 S. Main St., will hold an open house for one-woman show "Straight From the Heart," by Jilly Weigel. The show features her jewelry designs, a demonstration by the artist, and harp and flute music by Eve Watters. Also that night the winners of the OASIS Valentine Artistic Envelope contest will be announced.

• Saturday in Berryville, the Barns of Rose Hill will team with the Magic Lantern Theater to present its monthly film "Stories We Tell," a PG-13 documentary that explores how a family deals with the elusive nature of truth and memory. The film will run from 3 to 5 p.m. at 95 Chalmers Court. Tickets are $8 for the public and $5 for members. Information: 922-2004, barnsofrosehill.org

• That evening, put on your dancing shoes and head to the Cecil F. Gilkerson Community Activities Center, 305 South Dogwood Drive, Harrisonburg, for the 50 and Wiser Valentine Dance, for participants 50 and older. Admission is $2 and includes music, treats and a special dance photo. To register, call 433-9168.

• Then Sunday, head to the Woodstock Museum for its Antiques Appraisal Fair & Chocolate Festival from noon to 4 p.m. at the corner of West Court and Muhlenberg streets. Bring antiques or photos of larger items to get verbal appraisals for $10 per item or $25 for three, and stay for the chocolate bake sale. Ribbons will be awarded for the best in each category.
