Community kite flying event to take flight Saturday
By Josette Keelor
In search of a high flying good time this weekend, hundreds are expected to show up for Saturday's Kite Festival at Sherando Park.
Bring your own kite, buy one at the park or get one free at the park courtesy of Chick-fil-A, which Karen Vacchio, public information officer with the Frederick County Parks and Recreation Department, said will give away a limited number of free kites to children.
"And the earlier you get there the better, for that," she said.
After a winter that held on as long as it could, Vacchio said she expects a good turnout from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
"We're looking at the weather forecast and it looks pretty good," she said. "No snow in the forecast, so that's good."
The event is hosted by Tri-State Nissan and the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winchester, Frederick and Clarke Counties.
For the BBBS, participating for its third year gives the organization a chance to interact with the community and spread the word about how others can volunteer for the organization, said BBBS Executive Director Juli A. Ferrell.
"It's really a fun outing for the community," she said. "It's just really cool to see all the kites in the air."
The festival also will include various food and craft vendors and feature the Richmond Air Force Kite Flying Club.
Vacchio said to expect elaborate kite flying demonstrations from club members, weather permitting.
"They are a very fun group to watch because they really can do some fun things," she said.
The event is free and open to all ages. Picnic lunches are also welcome.
"It really is just a fun day down in the park," Vacchio said, "and flying a kite sort of gives people a sense of freedom."
The Kite Festival will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the soccer fields at Sherando Park. The event is free.
