Daughter of actor Sean Astin will be Queen Shenandoah

Alexandra Louise "Ali" Astin, daughter of actor Sean Astin and his wife Christine, has been announced as Queen Shenandoah designate of the 87th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival.

Ali Astin, 17, is the granddaughter of Patty Duke, of "The Patty Duke Show" and "The Miracle Worker," and John Astin, of the original "Addams Family."

Her father Sean Astin, who was co-grand marshal of the festival with Loni Anderson in 2004, played hobbit Samwise Gamgee in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy and starred as the title character in the 1993 film "Rudy." Ali Astin also appeared in "The Return of the King," as 3-year-old hobbit Eleanor, a press release from the festival states.

She has pursued a passion for acting, performing in a Los Angeles community theater group, where she starred in an advanced production of Thornton Wilder's "Our Town." Currently she and her father have starring voiceover roles in the animated feature "Ribbit."

She is a member of an a capella choir at school and has performed with the choir at Carnegie Hall in New York City. She is a straight-A student, is captain of her varsity cheer squad and is a lead prosecutor on the varsity mock trial team. She also co-founded her school's Poetry Society.

As Queen Shenandoah LXXXVII, she will attend several planned festival events, including her coronation ceremony at 1:30 p.m. May 2. She will ride on the Queen's Float at the front of the Grand Feature Parade at 1:30 p.m. May 3.

Her parents are expected to attend the festival with her.
