Irish events bring green sheen to valley

St. Patrick's Day events will spring to life around the valley this week.

From 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, ShamROCK the Arts at 126 N. Kent St. will offer music by the Winchester Celtic Circle and entertainment by the McGrath School of Irish Step Dancers. Refreshments will include green beer and Guinness, with heavy hors d'oeuvres and green-themed artwork for sale.

Celtic band RUNA
At 4 p.m. Sunday, the Celtic roots band RUNA will perform traditional and contemporary Celtic music for the Bright Box Theater's St. Patrick's Day Celebration.

RUNA recently won Top Group and Top Traditional Group in a Pub, Festival, Concert at the 2013 Irish Music Awards. Joining them will be guest artist and uilleann piper Micheal Stribling.

Green exhibit
This month, "The Rub of the Green" exhibit will feature green-themed art at 1 lb. Gallery on the second floor of 29 N. Loudoun St., Winchester. The exhibit continues through March 29.

Irish dinner, lecture
Monday at the Edith J. Carrier Arboretum and Botanical Gardens at JMU, a St. Patrick's Day dinner lecture will take place from 6 to 9 p.m.

Presenter Dr. Jonathan Monroe will share stories from his bicycling trip to western Ireland where he circled the Burren, a vast area of exposed limestone and rich in botanical diversity. A slideshow will present photos of wildflowers and interesting sites like the Cliffs of Moher.

A three-course Irish meal will begin with Yorkshire pudding; continue with glazed corned beef, lentils, carrots, fried Irish cabbage and bacon; and conclude with Donegal Oatmeal Cream. Admission is $35.
