Cast, director of 'Flex is Kings' plan night of dancing

By Josette Keelor

Filmgoers to the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema on Saturday won't just see a documentary of New York City street dancing.

They'll get to see it live.

In the first-ever live dance performance at the Alamo, dancers from the film "Flex is Kings" will perform for the 4:30 p.m. showing at the theater in Kernstown.

According to Alamo Creative Manager Steve Nerangis, it will be a night to remember.

Starting at 3 p.m., video games courtesy of Press Start Video Games of Winchester will be free in the lobby, followed by the movie at 4:30 p.m.

"The movie is amazing, by the way," Nerangis said. "I just love this movie."

"We always do well with dance movies," he said. But this one isn't like the others.

The story of real dancers in New York, the documentary describes the art of flex dancing, or "flexing," a genre born in east Brooklyn where participants battle through dance as a form of respect to each other and an alternative to violence.

The film follows a group of dancers for more than two years, a news release from the theater said.

After the film, audience members may participate in a question and answer session with cast members and Director Deidre Shoo, and a live flexing performance.

The film, showing nationwide in select theaters, will also show in Kernstown at 9 p.m. Sunday, but because of travel conflicts for the cast, Saturday night's showing will be the only opportunity to see the show live.

"The fact that this is a documentary and there are real people involved whose real careers are on the line," Nerangis said, "... makes this really engrossing."

Tickets to the special Saturday showing with the cast and director are $12. For more information, contact the theater at 540-313-4060 or visit drafthouse.com/winchester.
