Mayors start off day with diverse breakfasts

It's the one thing most nutritionists can agree on.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and the decision to fill up or skip out can make or break the rest of your waking hours.

The following area mayors know how to start their day off right:

Doug Bradley
Mayor of: New Market
Average breakfast: A bowl of Multi-Grain Cheerios and fresh blueberries in 1 percent milk with a cup of coffee.

"I've been on that diet for at least 15 or 18 years," Bradley said.

Bucky Miller
Mayor of: Mount Jackson
Average breakfast: Two slices of multigrain bread sandwiching low-fat peanut butter, raisins, almonds and strawberry, banana or apple slices with a sprinkle of cinnamon.

"I have been eating this for breakfast the last six months or so and it has gained the nickname, 'The Buckernutter,' by my childhood friend Ryan MacDonald, who I made it for when he came up to work with me on election day this year," Miller said. "Truth be told, I usually eat one for lunch as well."

Dan Harshman
Mayor of: Edinburg
Average breakfast: A bowl of Cheerios with low-fat milk, low-fat fruit yogurt, a glass of "some type of fruit juice to wash down vitamins and four fish oil pills," a large cup of green tea with two tablespoons of Edinburg-sourced honey and 4-to-6 ounces of Nopal cactus juice to help lower inflammation.

"That's it, but I have been known to also eat a second, not-so-healthy breakfast when I go to an early morning breakfast meeting where food is served," Harshman said.

Jeremy McCleary
Mayor of: Woodstock
Average breakfast: Whole-grain cereal with either yogurt or a banana and a cup of coffee.

"I have stuck with this breakfast routine pretty consistently for several years," McCleary said. "I have found that it allows me to hit the ground running in the morning and it keeps me satisfied until lunch."

Phil Fauber
Mayor of: Toms Brook
Average breakfast: A bowl of cereal -- either Honey Nut Cheerios, regular Cheerios or Raisin Bran -- with 2 percent milk, a banana and two cups of coffee.

Fauber said he takes his coffee with a little bit of creamer and Splenda.

"I have a percolator," he said. "There's not too many percolators anymore, but that's the best way to do it, I think."

Tim Taylor
Mayor of: Strasburg
Average breakfast: Cereal with a muffin or a Danish pastry and a cup of coffee.

"Breakfast is my favorite meal," Taylor said. "I usually treat myself to a hearty breakfast on Saturday morning when I have more time to prepare one."

He said these weekend breakfasts typically consist of two fried eggs, bacon or sausage and two pieces of wheat or whole grain toast with butter and jam.

Charles Harbaugh
Mayor of: Middletown
Average breakfast: A McDonald's Big Breakfast with Hotcakes, which comprises a buttermilk biscuit, sausage patty, scrambled eggs, hash browns and three hotcakes.

Harbaugh, who is constantly shuffling between his full-time job as a business manager at NW Works, his part-time jobs and his mayoral duties, stops in for breakfast at McDonald's every morning.

"I love the breakfast gang who meet every morning, many of whom are veterans and retired. The conversation is great," Harbaugh said. "It's like breakfast and life experience at the same time."

Timothy Darr
Mayor of: Front Royal
Average breakfast: A large cup of coffee, a bowl of oatmeal, a banana and a cup of yogurt.

On the weekends, he eats a bagel or cereal -- he said he prefers Frosted Flakes -- and a cup of coffee.

Darr said he will order a veggie omelet or pancakes when at a restaurant.

"As you can see, I'm a creature of habit when it comes to breakfast," he said.
