Children make music in summer reading program
Bill Heitchew, a member of the New Market Area Library board of directors, organized the July 16 summer reading program with the theme Making Music. Heitchew made musical instruments to create the train sounds from the children’s book “Little Engine That Could.”
Becky Kipps, library board chairperson and children’s program coordinator, read the book while Heitchew, with the help of teen volunteer Caitlin Thompson, took the “train” over the mountain to deliver toys to the children.
Heitchew brought along materials for a craft in which children made shakers from plastic bottles and pebbles. He created a drum set from recycled plastic materials and several other music makers.
