Foundation awards scholarships
Shenandoah Memorial Hospital Foundation has awarded three Burgess and Julia Nelson Scholarships to outstanding high school students in Shenandoah County.
Foundation Chair Rick Glading presented the scholarships to three graduating seniors, one from each of the county high schools, for exhibiting leadership and service to others and demonstrating a commitment to pursue careers in the health care field in the Shenandoah Valley.
This year’s recipients include:
Bethany Neri, of Central High School, who plans to pursue emergency medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.
Amber Gonzalez, of Stonewall Jackson High School, who plans to pursue a degree in epidemiology at the University of Virginia.
Christian Hepner, of Strasburg High School, who plans to pursue a degree in biology at Virginia Weslyan College with the goal of becoming a physician’s assistant.
The Burgess and Julia Nelson Scholarship was established in 2010 from a $1.9 million gift from the trust of community leader and philanthropist Burgess Nelson.
