New bridge set to open Monday
Motorists can start using the new bridge over Gooney Creek on U.S. 340 South beginning next week.
The Virginia Department of Transportation advised Friday that the bridge is scheduled to open to traffic on Monday, weather permitting. Northbound and southbound drivers need to remain alert for shifting travel lanes as they approach the bridge approximately five miles south of Front Royal.
VDOT also plans to reopen Poor House Road (Va. 605) at the intersection of U.S. 340 next week. Crews had closed the intersection north of the bridge in April during construction.
The $12.7 million, Gooney Creek Bridge replacement project sought to make safety improvements to the crossing originally built in 1936 that doesn’t meet current design standards. The new bridge features two, 12-foot travel lanes, 10-foot shoulders and a rumble strip to separate vehicle and bicycle traffic.
