A card shower is planned for Dennis Foltz, who will celebrate his 68th birthday Nov. 1. Cards can be sent to 12865 S. Middle Road, Edinburg 22824.
Dennis Banks, cofounder of the American Indian Movement, will be the master of ceremonies for the Harvest Gathering Friday through Sunday at the Clarke County Fairgrounds in Berryville.
The Gathering is a traditional indigenous outdoor harvest dance, partnered with the Virginia Gourd Festival, combining living history exhibitors, conservancy of environment, preservation of history and understanding of Native ways.
Banks founded AIM in 1968 in Minnesota to address racism and police brutality and treaty rights of Native Americans. He is best known for leading the 1973 occupation of Wounded Knee by traditional Indians, where 83 years before, U.S. troops had slain a band of Lakota men, women and children. He is the only living leader of the last American Indian vs. U.S. Government armed conflict. Today he leads the “Longest Walks” across the nation to raise awareness and reverse diabetes.
