VDOT to update message boards
Motorists in the Northern Shenandoah Valley can expect more services as they hit the roads for the Thanksgiving holiday.
The Virginia Department of Transportation plans to show travel times for travelers on parts of Interstates 81 and 64. VDOT also plans to expand Safety Service Patrols on Nov. 29.
Electronic message boards will display a destination, miles to the location from the sign and an estimated travel time, refreshed every five minutes, beginning at 6 a.m. today through 9 a.m. Nov. 30.
Mileage and times will be displayed on Interstate 81 between Lexington and Staunton; Staunton and Harrisonburg; Harrisonburg to Interstate 66 and from Interstate 66 to Winchester. Signs will display mileage and times on Interstate 64 East between Waynesboro and Charlottesville and westbound between Charlottesville and Interstate 81 at Staunton.
VDOT might temporarily suspend the messages in the event it needs to display information about an incident or work zone that can change travel time.
Travelers can use 511Virginia to check times and road conditions.
VDOT also plans to expand Safety Service Patrols from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Nov. 29 on Interstate 81 from Frederick County through Rockbridge County; Interstate 66 from I-81 to Linden; and on Interstate 64 from I-81 to Zion Crossroads. Safety Service Patrols focuses on managing incidents and responding to emergencies. The patrols also help disabled motorists, clear debris from the road and set up short-term traffic control for emergency responders.
