Awards presented at Rotary meeting
Rotary District 7570 Governor Alex Wilkins was the guest speaker and presented two awards at the Dec. 2 meeting of the Rotary Club of New Market.
Wilkins presented the District Governor’s Citation to Rotarian Kevin Cannon for outstanding service since joining the club in 2005 and serving as president for the 2008-2009 year. He is a passionate supporter of the Polio Plus campaign. He was also presented with his third Paul Harris Award by club Foundation Chairman Jim Weissenborn.
Wilkins presented Lil Hughes, a non-Rotarian, with the Paul Harris Award for outstanding community service. She was the 1985 organizer and leader of the Manor Memorial Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry. She arranged transportation to pick up food from the regional food bank and solicited churches and stores in the community for food and dollars to keep the food pantry alive. The pantry originally served about 15 families on a monthly basis and 25 years later, by the time she resigned as coordinator, the pantry was serving from 80 to 120 families each month.
