More than 150 people gathered recently at the Millwood Station Banquet Hall in Winchester to celebrate community philanthropy and honor the founding members of the Community Foundation of the Northern Shenandoah Valley.

This year’s honorees at the Evening with our Community Stars included Bruce Downing, Harry Smith, Mary and Bill Huehn, Byron Brill and Larry Van Hoose.

Hosted by Barry Lee of WINC 92.5 FM Radio, the event featured a video of four of the honorees as they explained the process that led to the development of the Community Foundation, what the foundation does and where they would like to see the foundation in the future.

Michael Whalton, CEO of the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation and Community Foundation director from 2005 to 2010, shared stories highlighting contributions of honorees and their spouses.

Erik Beatley, Community Foundation board president, shared the importance of planning for the future of the charities and causes the attendees support.

The Community Foundation was established in 2001 by the Winchester Rotary. It has an endowment of $1.5 million and has returned more than $300,000 to the community in grants and pass-through funds over the past two years.
