Rotary donates food to needy

The Rotary Club of Front Royal delivered 130 boxes of food to needy families through its Doc Smith Christmas basket program on on Dec. 19.

The Rotary Club of Front Royal delivered 130 boxes of food to needy families through its Doc Smith Christmas basket program on on Dec. 19.

“The goal of the Doc Smith Christmas basket program is to provide basic food staples to families in need in the community to make sure they can have a traditional Christmas dinner, “ said Chairman Bret Hrbek.

The baskets included ham, turkey, bread, powdered milk. stuffing mix, jelly, flour, sugar, canned vegetables and miscellaneous items.

The program originated in 1916 with Police Chief Edgar C. Smith, who was most commonly referred to as Doc Smith. The program typically serves 100 to 150 families each year throughout Warren County.
