Career meetings for students, parents scheduled

Parents and students are invited to a series of three regional meetings entitled Pathways to Success: Roadmap to Your Career, to discuss career options available to students after graduation.

Shenandoah County Public Schools Supervisor of Career and Technical Education Katie Rice said these meetings will provide presentations from various groups, including a panel of business and industry representatives, the Valley Health human resources department and Lord Fairfax Community College’s Workforce Solutions.

Rice said the meetings are geared toward parents and students, but students are highly recommended to attend.

“It is their future we are discussing and they need to be involved in trying to make the most well-informed decisions possible because ultimately while parents should guide their children in the right direction, students are ultimately the ones who benefit from their choices and need to have responsibility in the process,” she said.

Students and parents will hear what skills business and industry leaders are seeking it their employees.

“We want parents and students to understand that everyone needs skills, but there are a variety of excellent vehicles to get there, not just one route and all post-secondary or training opportunities are good viable options,” Rice said.

The meetings are sponsored by the Health Science Partnership team, created four years ago and composed of representatives from Valley Health, Lord Fairfax Community College, and school divisons in Shenandoah, Frederick, Warren, Page and Clarke and the city of Winchester.

“Through this partnership we have all been able to focus in on the needs in the health care pipeline, creating new courses and experiences that enable students to engage in the health sciences in ways that were not previously in place,” Rice said.

“In 2013, this partnership team was awarded the Virginia Department of Education Creating Excellence Award for Career and Technical Education Business and Industry Partnership,” she added.

The meetings are:
• 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Lord Fairfax Community College Corron Center
• 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Stonewall Jackson High School
• 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 8 at Skyline High School
