R-MA student a semifinalist in bee

Ali Kamel, son of Ramsey and Sara Kamel, of Vienna, has been named a semifinalist in the Virginia National Geographic State Bee. He is an eighth-grade student at Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal.

The state contest will be held April 1 at Longwood University. Up to 100 students in each state plus the District of Columbia, Department of Defense Dependents Schools and U.S. territories will compete in the state bee. Each state champion will receive $100, the National Geographic book “The National Parks: An Illustrated History” and a medal.

The national contest will be held May 22-25 in Washington, D.C., and the final round will air on the National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo WILD at 8 p.m. May 27.
