Weekend Events for April 22

The following are some of the area events that will be held this weekend:

Redbud Festival

The annual Browntown Redbud Festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Browntown Community Center at 96 Browntown Road, Browntown.  Food, music, crafts and more. Free admission.

Library music
Samuels Public Library in Front Royal will host acoustical guitarists John Kovak and Bill Dykes during its lunchtime music series at 12:30 p.m. today. Bring your lunch and enjoy listening to some tunes. Information: 540-635-3153.

Conservatory
Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester has announced the following performances:
• Today: 8 p.m., Dutch reed quintet Calefax will perform in Armstrong Concert Hall, 702 University Drive. Tickets: $25.
• Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.: Benjamin Britten’s comic opera “Albert Herring” featuring humor, wit, amazing costumes and a lighthearted score performed by Kammermusik Players, Ohrstrom-Bryant Theatre, 620 Millwood Ave. Tickets: $20.
• Sunday: 8 p.m., the Percussion Ensemble will give a free concert in Armstrong Concert Hall.

Magic Lantern
The Magic Lantern Theater will host a screening of “Merchants of Doubt” (PG-13) at 7:30 p.m. today at the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Shenandoah Valley in Stephens City. This is a film documentary examining pundits-for-hire in the Washington policy process on topics such as toxic chemicals, drugs and climate control. A discussion and reception will follow the showing.

‘Shrek the Musical’
The Front Royal Christian School will present “Shrek The Musical Jr.” at 7 p.m. today and 3:30 p.m. Saturday at New Hope Bible Church in Front Royal. Doors open 30 minutes before the production.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for children and senior citizens and free to ages 4 and younger. Tickets may be purchased at the door. Information: 540-635-6799 or www.frontroyalchristianschool.com/donate.

Arts Chorale
The Arts Chorale of Winchester will perform “Happy Birthday Bob & Alice!” at 8 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday in Armstrong Auditorium at Shenandoah University. The program is a celebration of waltzes and poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay by two of choral music’s greats, Robert Shaw and Alice Parker as well as a celebration of their birthdays. There will be a pre-concert chat with Artistic Director Michael Main 30 minutes before each concert. Admission is by donation (suggested $10 per adult).

Poetry contest
Selah Theatre will host a poetry open mic featuring winners of the Front Royal Voices Poetry Contest at 7 p.m. Saturday at 30 E. 8th St., Front Royal. Also featured will be a musical guest and poets Rich Follett and Jose Padua. Information: Heather Davis at hdavis67@gmail.com or www.selahtheatreproject.org.

Dance ensemble
Samuels Public Library in Front Royal will host the Connect the Dots Dance Ensemble for “Spring into Dance” at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Dances will include ballet, contemporary, jazz and self-choreographed solos by the students. Information: 540-635-3153.

Art Group
The Art Group Gallery, located in the Bowman Shannon Cultural Arts Center in Mount Jackson, will hold an open house and demonstrations 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The open house is part of the Gardens, Grapes and Galleries event for the Shenandoah County Artisan Trail.

Library movie
Handley Library in Winchester will show the G-rated movie “Babe” at noon on Saturday. Families are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch. Information: www.handleyregional.org.

‘Illyria’
Shenandoah Conservatory will present a special outdoor production of “Illyria,” the musical re-telling of Shakespeare’s romantic comedy “Twelfth Night” at 1 and 6 p.m. Saturday at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, 901 Amherst St., Winchester. Tickets are $10. Book talk
Barns of Rose Hill will host a Book Talk by Lesley Francis, granddaughter of poet Robert Frost,  7-9 p.m. today.  She will discuss her new book “You Come Too: My Journey with Robert Frost,”  a memoir and biography based on scholarship and recollection. Madison Singers
The JMU Madison Singers and Chorale will perform at 8 p.m. Friday in the Forbes Center Concert Hall. Tickets are $8-$10. Information: www.jmuforbescenter.com.

Wind ensemble
