Weekend Events

The following are some of the area events that will be held this weekend:

‘The Gathering’
“The Gathering,” an event to honor military history and those who have served, will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Hottel Keller Memorial, 11523 Back Road, Toms Brook.

Veteran support groups will be available to assist veterans and their families in need. The Quantico Marine Color Guard, Valley Marines, National Guard Unit-Woodstock with vehicles and troops, National Guard Unit-Winchester with troops and a 30-foot rock wall and re-enactors representing the Revolutionary War will give demonstrations. Recruiters from the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, Vietnam Veterans of America, Arch/Supportive Services for Veteran Families and Strength in Peers, which offers peer support services for veterans and First Responders, will be on hand. The Virginia Department of Veterans Services and Martinsburg VA Medical Center will be on site to assist veterans.

Battlefield series
The Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park will offer a special battlefield series of programs on select Saturdays through October.

The first program, which is free, will be “Stemming the Tide: the Stand of the 6th Corps at Cedar Creek” at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The program offers participants more details than regular presentations and the opportunity to see sites not normally open or widely accessible to the general public.

For this session, participants will meet at the Visitor Contact Center in Middletown and car caravan to various locations on the battlefield. Information: 540-869-3051 or www.nps.gov/cebe.


Cash party
The Laurel Center, which helps victims of domestic and sexual violence, will hold a cash party starting at 5 p.m. Saturday at Body Renew Fitness & Family Sports Center in Winchester.

Tickets are $40 per person and include an open bar, dinner, tip jars, silent auction and grand prize drawing of $3,000. Must be 21 to attend and present to win. Information, tickets: 540-667-6160.


Children’s program
Girl Scout Troop 40303 will host an event at 6 p.m. Saturday at Fantasy Land Park in Front Royal.

Activities include a scavenger hunt, hot dogs and chips, and children’s activities. There will also be clothes and shoes available free for the community.

Activities are free, although donations will be accepted.


Cash party
The Front Royal Soccer Association ROX Travel Soccer Program will hold a spring cash party from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Front Royal Moose Lodge. Proceeds will benefit the growing U-8 through U-19 youth travel program.

Tickets, which are $50, include a barbecue dinner and drinks, pull tabs, silent auction, 50/50 raffle and a $5,000 cash prize.

Family Fun Day
The Warren County Parks and Recreation Department, in cooperation with the Front Royal Gold Club Advisory Committee, will host a Family FootGolf Fun Day Tournament from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Entry fee is $20 for a family of four for 18 holes and a hamburger or hot dog. The game combines the skills of soccer with the rules of golf.

‘Grace and Glorie’
Selah Theatre Project will present “Grace and Glorie,” a play that tells the story of the relationship between Grace, a 90-year-old woman from the Blue Ridge Mountains, and her hospice volunteer Glorie, today through Sunday at 30 E. 8th St., Front Royal.

A wine and canapé reception at 7 p.m. will precede performances at 8 p.m. today and Saturday and 3 p.m. for the 8 p.m. performance on Sunday. Tickets are $20. Proceeds benefit Blue Ridge Hospice. Information: 540-686-5185 or www.selahtheatreproject.org.


Little Theatre
“Dancing at Lughnasa, Brian Friel’s play set in Donegal, Ireland, will be performed at 8 p.m. today and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Winchester Little Theatre, 315 W. Boscawen St., Winchester. Tickets range from $15.50 to $19.75. Information: 540-662-3331.


Sky Meadows
Sky Meadows State Park in Delaplane will host National Kids to Parks Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Kids will make their own adventure using Junior Ranger booklets, Discovery Backpacks or GPS adventures.

The Life on the Farm program will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. where kids can learn the role children played on the family farm in the mid 1800s.
