Card showers

Goodlatte meeting

Congressman Bob Goodlatte’s staff open door community meeting scheduled for today in Mount Jackson has been cancelled.

Poster contest

Friday is the deadline for teens to submit a poster for the New Market Area Library’s poster contest being held as part of the summer reading program, which kicks off June 16.

Theme for the program is “Read for the Win.” Information:

4-H meetings

The Shenandoah County Extension office has announced the following 4-H meetings:

  • Fort Valley 4-H Club and Cloverbuds: 4:30 p.m., Sunday at the community center.
  • New Market 4-H and Cloverbuds: 6:30 p.m., Monday at Reformation Lutheran Church.
  • County 4-H Livestock Club: 7 p.m., Tuesday at Wakemans Grove Church of the Brethren.
  • St. Luke-Saumsville 4-H Club and Cloverbuds: 7 p.m., Wednesday at Saumsville Christian Church.

Nurse luncheon

Nurses who graduated from the Winchester Memorial Training School or retirees of the hospital will hold their quarterly Dutch-treat luncheon at 11 a.m. Monday at Golden Corral in Winchester. Information: 540-667-7953.

Bible school

Cool Spring Church of God will hold vacation Bible school for all ages from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 3705 Gooney Manor Loop, Browntown.

Kiwanis Club

Allen Baldwin, with the City of Winchester Fire Department, will be the speaker at a luncheon meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Old Town at noon Monday at the Godfrey Miller Home on the Old Town Mall.

Youth program

A meeting to kick off the “Be in the Spotlight and Express Yourself” program exploring the world of media will be held at 6 p.m. June 20 at the Shenandoah County Government Center in Woodstock.

The program is open to youth ages 12-18 interested in creative writing, photography and voice, video and film production and who are willing to make a two-month commitment.

4-H camp

“Cool Cloverbuds” 4-H day camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 21-23 at the Strasburg Town Park.

Cost is $85. The camp is open to ages 5-8, and 4-H membership is not required.

Super Saturdays

The Shenandoah County Cooperative Extension will offer Super Saturdays with “Creative Cupcakes” planned from 9 to 11:45 a.m. June 25 at the county Government Center in Woodstock.

During Session 1, participants age 9-12 will learn to bake and create themed cupcakes for special occasions. Cost is $25.

4-H scholarship

July 1 is the deadline for current and former members of the Shenandoah County 4-H and FFA to apply for the 4-H Dairy Club Endowed Scholarship to further their education. Any area of study qualifies with preference given to candidates who have dairy experience. Applications are available at each high school’s guidance department, from FFA advisers and at the county extension office in Woodstock.

Einherjar Rally

The 2016 Einherjar Rally, a charity event to benefit veterans, will be held starting at 10 a.m. June 25 at Grove’s Winchester Harley-Davidson.

Featured will be live entertainment by Terry Oates & the Mudcats, food, children’s activities, photo opportunities with the International Bikini Team, Mark Moseley, Ron McDole and Erik Estrada.

The film “Project 22,” a story about veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder who seek to end their pain by taking their own lives, will be shown. A question and answer session with the movie’s producers will follow. The event will continue with a police-escorted motorcycle ride.

Donations and proceeds will go to WarYours, Inc., a local nonprofit organization dedicated to serving veterans and combating PTSD.

4-H camp

The Culpeper-Shenandoah-Rappahannock 4-H residential camp will be held July 31-Aug. 4 for ages 9-13 at the Northern Virginia 4-H Educational Center in Front Royal.

Campers do not have to be 4-H members. Partial scholarships available, based on need. Activities include swimming, canoeing, crafts, performing arts, archery, horseback riding, games and campfire programs. Information: 459-6140.
