Peaceful demonstration
Earth Allies, a newly formed regional environmental group, will hold a Hands Across Our Land event with a peaceful demonstration protesting the use of unwanted and unnecessary fossil fuel infrastructure at 6:30 p.m. today at the Old Town Amphitheater in Winchester. The group will then proceed to the Old Town Mall.

Earth Allies is a chapter of the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League that supports Hands Across Our Land which was founded in 2010 and grew into an international movement supporting clean energy after the BP oil disaster that April.

New Market 4-H
The New Market 4-H Club and Cloverbuds will meet at 6:30 pm. Monday at Reformation Lutheran Church. Information: 459-6140.

Backpack program
Employees of Shenandoah Telecommunications Co. (Shentel), through the company’s Community Connections Program, held its third annual Summer Backpack Program collecting a record amount of 2.5 tons of food to support regional food banks in Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland.

The philanthropic initiative program helps provide food during the summer to children who are on the free or reduced-price lunch program during the school year. Information: www.shentel.com.
