Kernstown Battlefield to host lawn party, ball on Saturday

The Kernstown Battlefield will host a lawn party and ball this Saturday.

The One Day Civilian Event, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will feature period games on the lawn that include croquet, horseshoes, lawn bowling and bocce ball.

Jennifer Jones, a volunteer with the Kernstown Battlefield, said the idea came about last year when the board of Kernstown noticed that there were virtually no civilian events.

“Just about everything in the area was centered around the battles. We wanted to do something different,” she said. “Something a little more relaxed than having to organize battle scenarios.”

She added that this is the second year for the Civilian Lawn Party, and the board has received a larger response than last year.

“Pack your picnic basket, grab your blanket and come sit on the lawn of the Pritchard House,” Jones said.

This year will also include a game of rounders, or old-fashioned baseball, weather permitting. The 2nd VA Cavalry String Band will perform in the afternoon. The lawn party is free to the public.

The battlefield will also host its first inaugural ball from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at 610 Battle Park Drive in Winchester.

The 2nd VA Cavalry String Band will perform again, and Dance Master Tom Mack and the Shenandoah Valley Civil War Era dancers will hold dance instructions for those who attend.

“In addition to the dance, we will also be giving evening tours of the Pritchard House, have a lit path to the top of Pritchard’s Hill, light refreshment provided by local businesses and door prizes,” Jones said.

The ball is $25 per person and requires “period dress or Sunday best” attire. The cost of the tickets is tax deductible.
