Weekend Events

The following are some of the area events that will be held this weekend:

County fair
The 99th annual Shenandoah County Fair starts today and runs through Sept. 3. Tonight is Family Night, with adult tickets selling for $5 and children entering free.

This weekend’s events include Virginia’s largest greased pig contest, which will take place at 7 tonight. Saturday’s events include a country tractor pull at 12:15 p.m. and the modified truck and tractor pull at 6:30 p.m.  The diesel pick-up truck drags will be at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Adult general fair admission is $6 and kids 6 to 12 enter for $2. Kids 5 and under are free for each day except Friday.   For a full listing of scheduled events, visit the fair’s website at http://www.shencofair.com.

Wine festival
Belle Grove Plantation, located south of Middletown, will host a wine festival from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

The event will feature tastings from regional vineyards, samples of the Belle Grove 1797 Whiskey, chef demonstrations highlighting local foods, artisan vendors and house tours.

Entertainment will include live music by Danni Leigh from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Clay Arthur and the Mystic Pistols at 3 p.m.

Family film
Handley Library will show the G-rated movie “Tinkerbell and the Lost Treasure” at noon Saturday. Families are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch. Lemonade and popcorn will be available. Information: www.handleyregional.org.

Bluegrass concert
Bud’s Collective will give a bluegrass concert from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, 901 Amherst St., Winchester.

Tickets are $5 for museum members or $10 for all others. Children 12 and younger are free. Information: 540-662-1473 or www.themsv.org.

Arts Council
The Blue Ridge Arts Council will host a concert featuring Rich Follett performing music from his “Somewhere in the Dark” CD and Ryan Jewell from 6 to 8 p.m. today at 305 E. Main St., Front Royal.

Spirits and hors d’oeuvres will be served. Tickets are $20 for individuals or $30 for couples. Admission includes a copy of Follett’s CD. Information: 540-635-9909 or www.blueridgearts.org.

The National Sporting Library & Museum in Middleburg will host a Mosby Heritage Association night concert featuring Tara Mills and Jimmy Stelling from 6 to 8 p.m. today at 102 The Plains Road, Middleburg.

There will be local wine and Virginia craft beer. Admission is free. The concert will be held rain or shine. Picnics are welcome, however, no glass containers or outside alcohol permitted. Information: 540-687-6542 ext. 24 or www.nationalsporting.org.

Concert series
The Martinsburg Jazz Orchestra will perform at the Bluemont Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. today at the old Frederick County Courthouse, 20 N. Loudoun St., Winchester.

Admission is $5 per person, $4 for Bluemont Friends and senior citizens and $2 for children under 12. In case of bad weather, the concert will be moved to the First Presbyterian Church, 116 S. Loudoun St. Information: 540-338-4640.

Bright Box
Bright Box Theater will have a comedy weekend featuring Chris Monty and Gene Trifilo at 7 p.m. today and 7 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday at 15 N. Loudoun St., Winchester. Tickets range from $15 to $20. Information: 540-665-2878, www.brightboxwinchester.com.
