Bluegrass bands to perform at music festival
Bluegrass bands will hit the stage this weekend at the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival in Orkney Springs.
The Grascals will be among three bands playing at the Hot Strings and Cool Breezes Bluegrass Minifest this holiday weekend.
Band members include Danny Roberts, Terry Eldredge, Terry Smith, Kristin Scott Benson, Adam Haynes and John Bryan.
Roberts said this is the first time the band will be performing at this festival, but that he’s very excited.
“There’s always a lot of great fans in that area and it’s just a beautiful area,” he said, “so we are definitely ready to have a good time there for sure.”
The band will perform its staple songs as well as newer ones. He said he would describe the band’s music as contemporary bluegrass.
“We have a good time,” he said. “Our music’s fun.”
The band formed 12 years ago and has learned a lot since its formation, he said. The first couple years were spent on the road opening for Dolly Parton and he said they learned a lot about the industry.
From Parton, they learned that the most important parts of performing are to entertain the fans and have a good time.
“Watching her night in and night out on the stage was amazing,” he said. “She was a good mentor to us.”
When performing, Roberts said the band enjoys both large and small venues because they each bring something different to the table.
He said large venues are a blast with thousands of fans singing along with the band.
At smaller venues, he said he likes the more intimate experiences with the fans.
After each of their performances, they have a table set up for meet and greets to sign autographs and get that one-on-one time for the fans.
“Fans really enjoy that,” he said.
“You’re out there with the people,” he said, “and they become almost like a second family to you.”
Joining The Grascals at the bluegrass minifest will be Flatt Lonesome and The Barefoot Movement.
The Bluegrass Minifest will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday.
Also this weekend, Bruce Hornsby and The Noisemakers will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Joining Hornsby will be band members J.V. Collier, John “JT” Thomas, Sonny Emory, Ross Holmes and Gibb Droll. They are The Noisemakers.
