Donald Parkes, of Front Royal, has been voted into the Virginia Horseshoe Hall of Fame. Parkes began pitching sanctioned tournaments at the age of 60, winning 80 trophies and plaques over a 25-year span.
He has participated in 19 world horseshoe tournaments in the United States and Canada. He won gold medals in horseshoes, table tennis, basketball shooting and golf in the Virginia Senior Games and participated in six national Senior Games, playing horseshoes and table tennis. Parkes is a member of the Winchester Horseshoe Club.
Strasburg native Carl Williams was recognized for academic achievements during his recent graduation from Universal Technical Institute in Exton, Pennsylvania.
He graduated from the diesel and industrial technology program with a 3.93 grade-point average and 99.98 percent attendance. He received three Student of the Course awards for earning the highest grade for that course, eight Director’s List awards and was nominated into Alpha Beta Kappa honor society.
He has accepted a position with Winchester Equipment.
