OctoBeer Fest to serve up German music, brews

OctoBeer Fest is returning to Old Town Winchester for a fourth year.

The two-day German-themed beer and wine festival will be held today and Saturday at the Old Town Winchester Loudoun Street Mall, said Dario Savarese, special event coordinator for Old Town Winchester through Full Circle Marketing.

The festival includes German music, food and beverages with German and Bavarian influences.

Savarese said they will welcome a deejay and two new acts, Bavarski Band and The Continentals, who will perform upbeat German drinking music for the 2,000-a-day visitors expected to attend.

He said more than 40 beers and wines will be featured from around the world at the festival.

“As we continue to grow with this event we’ve gotten better in doing a little bit more in the spirit of the OctoBeer Fest, or Oktoberfest that they have across the country, and as well as in Germany,” Savarese said. “This year we’ve grown our legitimate German beers.”

The beer selection will include five Paulaner beers: Hefeweizen, Oktoberfest Marzen, Munich Lager, Salvator and Oktoberfest Wiesn. Local brews and ciders will also be available, including selections from Escutcheon, Alesatian, Winchester Cider Works and Winchester Brew Works. Traditional warm mulled wine will also be on hand.

Two German-inspired food vendors will provide homemade brats, pretzels, potato salads, slaws and more German treats for those who attend.

“We’re always trying to do what we can to inspire local business,” Savarese said.

A free photo booth at the Taylor Pavilion will provide a choice of costumes for customers. The festive atmosphere will also include face painters, stein holding contests, street performances, an LED light show and an OctoBeer Fest costume contest.
